Curated by Rose Korber, the 14th annual ART SALON AT THE BAY at The Bay Hotel, Victoria Road, Camps Bay, from 23 December 2005 to 12 January 2006 lived up to the high reputation of its previous incarnations.
The Salon presented a varied and comprehensive overview of the current state of South African art. Artists featured included William Kentridge, Willie Bester, Sam Nhlengethwa, David Koloane, Conrad Botes, Colbert Mashile, Johann Louw, Robert Slingsby, Deborah Bell, Claudette Schreuders and Stephen Inggs.
Since its inception in 1992, the Art Salon has been a major enterprise, bringing together, under one roof, a large showcase of quality artworks, in various styles and media. This year's Salon saw a subtle shift towards more cutting-edge work while still maintainting its backbone of 'classics' such as John Kramer, Erik Laubscher, Peter Bonney and Walter Meyer.
In keeping with the current trend towards contemporary, younger artists, the Salon had a broad representation of works by Peter Eastman, John Murray, Trasi Henen, Ruan Hoffmann, Alastair Whitton, Francois van Reenen and Daniel Halter. In the photography section, leading South African photographers David Goldblatt and Stephen Inggs were on view.
In addition to the traditional genres of landscape and figurative painting, the Salon featured examples of some of the best in sculpture and ceramics. Highlights in the sculpture section are a remarkable triptych of figurative works in mild steel by Jaco Sieberhagen, a bronze horse and rider by Wilma Cruise and a powerful combination of a ship/woman in ironwood by Shepherd Ndodzu.
Leading ceramic artists include Barbara Jackson, Louise Gelderblom, Hennie Meyer, Heather Mills, Helen Vaughan, Wendy McLaghlan and Shirley Fintz.
According to Korber: 'The 2005 Salon also saw a somewhat more focused selection, with a concentration on quality. This Salon was leaner and more directed towards the demands of the contemporary collector than ever before. The newly refurbished display areas at The Bay Hotel enabled the art to be shown at its very best.'
