Some notes on Eight Typewriters

Kentridge produced this small, intimate Suite of 8 Typewriters during his sabbatical at Columbia University, New York in 2002 - 2003. (He had been invited to be Artist-in-Residence at Columbia for this period).

The old manual typewriter has held a huge fascination for Kentridge throughout his vast oeuvre, and images of typewriters have made an appearance in many of his major projects over the years. Intrigued by Columbia's large collection of old typewriters, it is not surprising that Kentridge was inspired to create a number of superb prints featuring typewriters of a bygone age, in collaboration with master printer, Maurice Payne at the LeRoy Neiman Center of for Print Studies at Columbia University.
