Artist's Statement
Peter Bonney is an industrial chemist / production manager turned artist. Born in the Cape in 1953, he grew up in Natal, matriculating from Durban High School in 1970.
He studied at the Natal Technikon and qualified with a national diploma in analytical chemistry in 1976, working primarily in the polyurethane industry, first as a chemist and then subsequently in production.
In 1983, after some twelve years in the industry, with wife and three children in tow, he chose to opt out of the rat race- dumping corporate ladder and career - to take up the passion of his youth - painting!
Over the ensuing years demand for his work has grown dramatically, and he has become well established in the South African contemporary art scene, and recognized and acknowledged in the media as being among the leaders in the hyper-realist school of painting in this country.
His style, use of the acrylic medium and his portrayal of the light and space so typical of the South African landscape are somewhat unique and enjoyed by many. His work is to be found in many corporate collections in this country, and in innumerable private collections both locally and abroad.
A 'mountain man' at heart, Bonney is currently based in the Eastern Freestate highlands, where he continues to produce his unique depictions of the South African landscape.
