Terra Incognita I (From the Palimpsest series) 2005 Handpainted gelatin silver emulsion on paper, Edition 2/20 Image size: 116 x 117cm Framed size: 121 x 132.5 x 6cm Artist's statement: This new series of work is informed by an experiential sense of both ancient and recent history, written onto the landscape of the Karoo as 'a site for utopian and dystopian speculation'. Marks that have been left on the land by millennia of history can be seen everywhere, ranging from ancient fossils to fences erected in the 1800's. In this vast, inhospitable, arid terrain, the sense of isolation and solitude is palpable and confronts the psyche very directly. The KHPC has also been responsible for the production and publication of a series of limited edition artists' books including original prints. Study and Research My research has concentrated on the influence of technology on the aesthetic and technical criteria in printmaking practice. This concern has informed my artistic production, specifically the incorporation of new media into printmaking practice. New Media: Investigating and implementing digital technology in the creative application and production of visual images for exhibition and publication. Aluminium plate offset and stone lithographic methods: Continuing departmental research concerned with developing new methods in specific technical applications of lithographic processes for exhibition and publication. Current Research The most recent body of work continues from a previous project Stanford Series in its use of found objects as emblems of transience; exploring their history, cultural residue and meaning. The images in Continuum form part of my personal experience. They are humble objects derived from material culture and nature; enamel jugs and plates, tarnished spoons, vegetables and zoological detritus. These are forms that have remained virtually unchanged over time and refer historically and culturally to the world that produced them. Engaging in an 'archaeographical' process of finding, collecting and recording objects in and around the village of Stanford has provided me with clues to the everyday culture and lifestyle of a small community. The objects (re)presented in the images are not intended as monuments to memorialise. Rather they should be seen as everyday objects that are continually created and disposed of without ceremony, reflecting on the culture and people through whose hands they have passed.
