S H A P I N G  P L A C E : Artists explore notions of landscape

The landscape has exerted a fascination upon travellers, explorers, scientists, philosophers and mystics since time immemorial. No less, artists have historicaly drawn from the subject of the open space around them for centuries, in an effort to better understand their context for living. For centuries, landscape has been one of the major genres for artistic expression in many cultures.

Conventional notions of landscape compete with new interpretations that actively seek to look at the ideas that underpin our understanding of this historical genre. These works will undoubtedly leave the visitor with a new sense of what the possibilities of landscape can achieve.

While the majority of the artists represented are South African, noted contemporary British artist, Maggi Hambling, is also included. The works are in several media, from oils and watercolours through to mixed media, photography, sculpture, ceramics and even beadwork.

The exhibition was on view at The Gallery at Grande Provence from 5 November until Sunday 11 December 2005.
