The Art Salon - widely regarded as one of the highlights of Cape Town's visual arts calendar - aims to present a comprehensive and varied overview of the current state of South African art. Artists featured include William Kentridge, Willie Bester, Sam Nhlengethwa, Robert Hodgins, Conrad Botes, Colbert Mashile, Robert Slingsby, Deborah Bell, Claudette Schreuders, Stephen Inggs and Richard Smith.
Since its inception in 1992, the Art Salon has been a major enterprise, bringing together - under one roof - a large showcase of quality artworks, in various media and styles. This year's Salon will see a subtle shift towards the most cutting-edge art, while still maintaining its backbone of 'classics' such as John Kramer, Erik Laubscher and Walter Meyer.
In keeping with the current trend towards the Contemporary, younger artists, such as Peter Eastman, Pamela Stretton, Sanell Aggenbach, Kate Gottkens, Alastair Whitton, Daniel Halter, Haneke Benade, Trasi Henen, Francois van Reenen, Jaco Sieberhagen and Roxandra Britz are well represented.
In addition to the traditional genres of landscape and figurative painting, the Art Salon will also feature examples of some of the best in sculpture, ceramics and photography.
Leading ceramic artists on this year's Salon include Barbara Jackson, Louise Gelderblom, Astrid Dahl, Hennie Meyer, Helen Vaughan and Shirley Fintz.
According to Korber:'This year's Art Salon - in a more intimate venue - promises to be a Salon with a difference. The 2007 Salon promises to have a more focused selection, and more directed towards the demands of the contemporary collector than ever before'.
