We are pleased to announce the availability of a selection of superb prints on paper by William Kentridge, spanning more than two decades (1989 - 2010). Several of these works are no longer available on the primary market and should therefore have considerable appeal for the discerning collector.
Among the highlights is an exquisite etching from 1989 - Levitation - where the image of the upside-down girl, with her billowing skirts and flowing hair, is underpinned by the image of the two megaphones below. Now ubiquitous in Kentridge's oeuvre, the megaphone makes an early appearance in this print - to be followed by iconic etchings, such as Untitled (Artist and Megaphone), made around 2000.
A special feature on this show is Kentridge's Atlas Confession of 2002 - an exceptional work of chine colle black paper figures (on speads from the Index of Stieler's Hand Atlas of 1906), published especially for Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany in 2002. This was a signal honour for the artist, as Documenta is widely regarded as the world'd most significant 5-yearly exposition of contemporary, international art.
Another rare piece is the William Kentridge Flute Portfolio - a suite of 4 etchings of 2007, which make reference to the main themes of Kentridge's acclaimed production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Commissiond by La Monnaie in Brussels, Kentridge's Magic Flute ended its world tour in South Africa in 2007.
Yet another hard-to-come-by set of 4 etchings is an Untitled work of 2003, juxtaposing images of a Typewriter / Globe of the World / Tree and Animal Skeleton - all seminal images, which the artist was to develop subsequently in many important works.
Next come a varied selection of wonderful prints, from different sources, including Smoke and Building from Zeno Writing; a fascinating conceptual piece, Minutes of a Slow Hour; Nose # 10 from Kentridge's famous series of 30 noses, made to coincide with his production of Shostakovitch's opera, The Nose, (Metropolitan Opera, New York, 2010) and two more, delightful, recent Nose-related works, Chaise Longue and Mirror.
Finally, there is a superb selection of Recent Linocuts by Kentridge, all produced in 2010. These riveting works in black and white, are a welcome return to this powerful medium by the maestro, after some twenty years. These new linocuts refer to Kentridge's 2010 production of Shostakovitch's opera, The Nose; his recent exhibition in the Egyptian wing of the Louvre; and his work towards the Refusal of Time - a collaborative work to be realised at Documenta 13 in 2012.
