Artist's Statement Louise Gelderblom, who holds a degree in fine art, majoring in graphic design, photography and philosophy of art, worked as a graphic designer for ten years before embarking on a full time career in ceramics in 1997. She has a studio in Cape Town, where she works and teaches. She has exhibited regularly in South Africa and her work is represented in public and private collections locally and internationally. Based on the premise that working in clay is like drawing in three dimensions, Gelderblom seeks to use clay to explore the relationship between surface, textures, volume, mark making, hand and thought. Each piece is hand built. As it takes up to six weeks to produce a single piece, an initial concept will be adapted and developed in the course of its construction. The pieces are interconnected and a continuous line of thought is developed through each series, which may consist of up to fifteen unique vessels. The result is a body of work, which reflects a ritualistic approach to the medium and solutions that are new and unique. Gelderblom feels that her work is part of an African, contemporary, urban design movement. The look is natural, serene and meditative. The work can be enjoyed individually or in sculptural installations of two or more pieces together.
